First Edition in English.
The first edition in English of Livy's Roman History (Ab urbe condita), and Philemon Holland's first published translation. Holland is considered by many the greatest translator of the Elizabethan era. Titus Livius, 59 B.C-17 A.D., born in Padua of noble birth though an advocate for a republic, gives us perhaps our best view of ancient Rome, his lengthy history spans the founding of Rome to the death of Drusus in 9 B.C. Quite possibly an inspiration for Shakespeare. ESTC 006185333; STC 16613.
