Very Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Large Incised Federal Eagle Decoration, Stamped "D. GOODALE / HARTFORD," CT origin, early 19th century, approximately two-gallon ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles. Reverse decorated with a large, deeply-incised design of a Federal eagle with shield across its chest, an American flag and branch in its talons, and a banner in its beak. Decoration lightly highlighted in cobalt. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The Federal eagle remained a popular motif in American stoneware decoration throughout the majority of the 19th century, and today it remains one of the most prized designs among collectors. A fine example of early Connecticut stoneware. Significant glued cracks throughout. 1 1/8" rim flake and a few minor rim chips.
