Harold Newton (American/Florida, 1934-1994), "Florida Beach by Twilight," oil on Upson board, signed lower right, presented in a white weathered wood frame, H.- 24 in., W.- 36 in., Framed- H.- 36 1/2 in., W.- 46 1/2 in. NOTE: Harold Newton was a founding member of the Florida Highwaymen, a group of twenty-six African American artists, who painted vivid Florida seascapes and sunsets out of their garages and cars in the 1950s and 60s. Earning the name the Florida Highwaymen, they spent their weekends driving to hotels and tourist venues to sell their works, since art galleries were not open to black artists in the segregated South. Newton was one the more prolific members, who trained in Fort Pierce under A.E. Backus.
