Joseph Norman (American, b. 1957). "Flamenco Women", 1996. Lithograph on wove paper. Signed, dated with edition number '2/25' in pencil, lower margin. Dimensions: 9 1/4" x 6". Framed under plexiglass: 16" x 12". The 1990’s was a very productive period for Joseph Norman. He completed the Kafka series in 1994 and this series of the Flamenco dancers was produced in 1996. This is an early numbered print purchased by one of Norman’s early supporters in Providence. Print number '12' of this edition along with several other prints by Norman is in the RISD Museum of Art Collection.Widely considered the most important African American lithographer of his generation, master draughtsman Joseph Norman has sought to retell hidden, muted, or silenced stories of the African American experience. His expressive work and use of symbolic motifs communicate a vivid sense of place, history, struggle and hope. Norman is in the permanent collections of the The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Museum, Rhode Island School of Design and the Newport Art Museum
