Description
George William Whitaker (American, 1840-1916). Dark Landscape with Trees & a Solitary Figure. Oil on Canvas. Signature not visible. Dimensions: 22” x 28”: framed: 25” x 31”. Condition: Fair. Paint loss bottom left, with crazing and in need of cleaning & minor restoration.After study with his first art instructor George Inness, George Whitaker sought further art instruction abroad with the natural landscape painters in the Barbizon forest region. When he returned to Providence to set up his art studio, he joined many kindred painting colleagues who sought spiritual inspiration from the American landscape such as the African-American painter Edward Bannister, winner of the 1876 Silver Medal (first place) from the Centennial Exposition. He became one of the founders of the Providence Art Club, and a careful observer of developments in American painting and promoter of the capital city painters. Whitaker established himself as a prominent painter in Providence earning the accolade of the “Dean of Artists’ from his colleagues.This painting is from the Thomas and Teresa Russell collection of overlooked American region artists assembled in the 1970’s.
