Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Central Asia, Afghanistan / Turkmenistan region, Bactria-Margiana (Oxus Civilization), Bronze Age, ca. 3000 to 1500 BCE. A pair of hand-carved stone seal beads or charms, one with a cruciform linear motif and the other with an abstract antelope or gazelle etched into the face; both are perforated for suspension. Researchers have various theories on how these stamps were used, including markers for individuals or ownership - however due to repeated and near identical patterns in seals - it more likely the seals were shared symbols of power or protection rather than markers of individuals. Similar marks from seal impressions have been found on pottery as well. Size of larger seal: 0.75" Diameter x 0.2" W (1.9 cm x 0.5 cm)
Provenance: private Middletown, New York, USA collection acquired before 1975
