Description
S.R. Burleigh (1853-1931). "French Countryside". Etching. Signed in plate. Dimensions: 4.5” x 6.5”, matted. Condition: Fair. Discoloration.S.R. Burleigh upon his marriage to Sarah in 1878 ,immediately headed off to Paris for art study. While he was at Brown and Sharpe in Providence, he learned to render exact drawings. He took drafting skills with him to Paris and worked on a few etchings such as this French countryside scene. However, he was not fond of etching and while he mastered oils in Paris it was eventually the medium of water color that he preferred & excelled at. Returning to Providence as a member of the Providence Art Club, Burleigh had his first exhibition at Doll and Richards Gallery in Boston in 1881. This commenced a successful artistic career of over fifty exhibitions in his lifetime. He was a beloved member of the Providence Art Club, and the first president of the Providence Watercolor Club. He had a long association with the Rhode Island School of Design serving on the board of directors (1887- 1893), as well as a renowned teacher. In addition, he submitted his work regularly to be shown at the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi, American Watercolor Club and the New York Watercolor Club.No reserve on this lot.
