Charles-Clement Bervic (French, 1756-1822) after Jean Baptiste Regnault (French, 1754-1829). "The Education of Achilles by the Centaur Chiron" engraving, 18th century. An 18th century engraving after Jean Baptiste Regnault's painting "The Education of Achilles by the centaur Chiron" (1782) which was his diploma painting for the Academie des Beaux-Arts and is now in the Louvre. The composition features Chiron, the wisest of all the centaurs, training Achilles in the art of hunting. Regnault created many large history paintings in the Neoclassical style, and his school was long regarded as the rival of Jacques Louis David's circle. Mounted beneath glass in an attractive custom matte and gold tone carved wooden frame. This original antique engraving is mounted under glass in a custom matte and gold tone carved wooden frame. Artwork has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very good condition commensurate with age. The image is vivid and strong. Expected age wear and normal scuffs/nicks to the frame finish, but otherwise the frame is very nice with attractive carved decorative motifs and fit with a suspension wire on the verso.
