Description
6th century AD . A cast bronze great square-headed brooch with trapezoidal headplate, ribbed bow and lozengiform footplate; the headplate with central panel with ribbed detail, running scroll detail to each edge and incised zigzags to the border; the bow deep with prominent central rib; the footplate with openwork lappets and running scroll detail, discoid terminals and horse-head lappets; pin-lugs and ferrous remains to the reverse. Cf. similar brooch from Morningthorpe, Norfolk, in Hines, J. A New Corpus of Great Square-Headed Brooches, item 51(b). 77 grams, 12 cm (4 3/4"). Private collection, Nottinghamshire, UK; acquired late 1980s-early 1990s; found Dereham, Norfolk.

Fair condition, some distortion and hole to bow.
