Description
Japanese Wood and Lacquer Inkstone Box, (Suzuri-bako), by Chikawa Shiko, Taisho period (1912-1926). The rectangular box in natural wood emphasizing the pattern of the grain, the exterior decorated with an Oxherding boy playing the flute before a large recumbent ox, the interior decorated with grasses and flowers in hiramaki-e and abalone, containing an inkstone with gilded edge and an Ohi Ware ceramic water dropper (Suiteki) marked Choju, the back of the Suzuri-bako bearing an old paper label marked Chikawa Shiko . Provenance: Bachmann Eckenstein Art and Antiques, Basel Switzerland.
