Description
Two Japanese Lacquer Trays, probably late 19th-early 20th century in date, sit on feet positioned at the corners. With decorative motifs of poppies and anemones in gilded and colored lacquer. Created mostly in gold with touches of silver, they are placed against a nashi-ji ground. A form of maki-e, the nashi-ji ground is achieved by sprinkling gold filings over the lacquer surface that is then burnished. The name of the technique is inspired by is close appearance to the skin of a pear (nashi). The trays are unsigned.
