Catalogue Note: Edgar Alexander McKillop (1879-1950) was a self-taught carver who worked in Balfour, North Carolina. A trained blacksmith, McKillop was a multi-talented individual who also worked in wood and likely played multiple musical instruments. According to notes at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the artist's daughter knew her father to be "a talented man. He could cook and sew and make rustic and fancy furniture. He could make anything from wood or any kind of metal. He was an inventor. We don't know of any kind of work that he could not do." McKillop's body of work includes carvings of animals, musical instruments, and historical figures, all executed in his characteristic whimsical style.
