Description
East Asia, Japan, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A vintage papier-mache and plaster anatomical male model used for the study of acupuncture with meridian lines both painted and outlined by cotton strings, the small nails representing pressure points where needles should be placed on the human body- these are each labeled with black characters. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate and balance the flow of energy, or "qi," to promote health and alleviate various physical and emotional conditions. Acupuncture was introduced to Japan from China around the 6th century, and both use the same meridian system, however, there are some differences in the way meridians are interpreted and treated. The face has glass eyes that add a lifelike expression to this figure. Size: 10" W x 29" H (25.4 cm x 73.7 cm)
