Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji period, ca. mid 19th to early 20th century CE. A leaded copper articulated model of a crab. Meticulously constructed of numerous hammered plates jointed inside the body to make for a flexible form, the crustacean's limbs and front claws move; surfaces are beautifully incised, some areas modeled in repousse, and the entire surface finished with a rich, chocolate brown and nearly black patina. Size: 4.75" L x 7.7" W x 2.125" H (12.1 cm x 19.6 cm x 5.4 cm)
This piece is a fabulous example of jizai okimono - lifelike, articulated animal figures. Such pieces were first created during a peaceful period in the 17th century when the business of crafting samurai armor calmed down, and certain metalsmiths turned their attention to realizing articulated sculptures like this example.

Condition
Signature on underside of exoskeleton. Minor surface wear with areas of scuffs and scratches. Right proper claw comes out of its socket.
