Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi Pueblo, ca. late 20th century CE. A pair of wooden dance implements / wands known as lightning sticks, probably carved from cottonwood and brightly painted. The sinuous, serpentine shapes symbolize snakes, a cosmological symbol of water and life. Rituals and dances using these wands encouraged rain and fruitful harvests. The notched stick is painted with fertility symbols of Kokopelli, tadpoles, and the cords tied around the ends would have attached eagle feathers as well. Size: 26" L x 3" W (66 cm x 7.6 cm)
