1841 hand colored mezzotint, etching and stipple on wove paper, engraved by John Sartain (1808-1897) after the c.1837 painting by John B. White of Charleston, South Carolina, entitled "General Marion in his Swamp Encampment Inviting a British Officer to Dinner". Published by the Appollo Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in the U.S., printed by J. Dalton. General Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (1732-1795) of South Carolinay, known as 'the Swamp Fox', celebrated for harassment of the British Troops as well as his personal graciousness, here meets to discuss prisoner exchange with an enemy officer, and invites him to a dinner of sweet potatoes. Frame, approx. 28 1/2" x 30 1/2". Sight, approx. 19" x 21 1/2".
