c.1852 hand colored engraving entitled "General Marion Crossing the Pedee," engraved on wove paper by Charles Kennedy Burt (American, 1823-1892) after the painting by William Tylee Ranney (American, 1813-1857) showing Revolutionary War hero Brigadier General Francis Marion, aka "the Swamp Fox" of South Carolina, on horseback on a crowded raft, leading his band of irregular forces across the Pedee River to harass the British. The African American man in the center of the composition has been identified as Oscar Marion, General Marion's enslaved assistant. Printed by J. Dalton. Published by the American Art Union. Frame, approx. 20 1/4" x 18". Sight, approx. 13 1/2" x 10 3/4".
