Description
A Very rare, old and interesting wooden mask from the Bamileke or Bangwa peoples, Cameroon, Africa. Carved wood with incised designs around the eyes and well handled and worn edges suggesting field use. This is a very rare mask, and considered one of the most dangerous and ferocious of all Bamileke masks. Only danced on occasion of big festivities. During the performance the mask was fixed by ropes and sprinkled with water in order to calm its aggressiveness. "Kungan" is a kind of religious society, led by nine priests, responsible for healing and truth telling. The mask measures 14 x 9.5 inches. ( 17 inches tall on professional custom display stand) Ex Leonard Kahan Gallery, New York 1980s, also Ex McConnel collection, VA.
