Description
This is a rare old example of a Elephant or Aka Mask, Kuosi Society, Bamileke Peoples, Grassfields region of Cameroon. A Ceremonial Hood mask in red fabric lined with fibers with a long front panel that represents the trunk of the elephant and the circular side discs, to its large ears and beaded decoration embroidered in a geometric patterns on the ears and the front panel or trunk.The mask has two open holes for the eyes of the dancer and the remains of a gourd helmet inside, which is now broken into pieces and very fragile.Such masks appeared in the Kuosi society which was a regulatory society, composed mainly of chiefs, high-ranking warriors and agents. This mask measures 22 inches tall x 13 inches wide. Provenance: Ex Leonard Kahan Gallery, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
Condition
fair, heavily damaged gourd inside the helmet, held together by the textile.
