Description
Wells, S. M. “Sylvester” (1938-2023) Florida Highwaymen Painting. Oil on plywood board - signed lower right. Executed in brush. Portrait of a young woman balancing a washbowl on their head. Fantastic use of light and shadow make facial features pop. These scenes were a favorite of Reverand wells as he copied them from National Geographic magazine. Unlike his peers, he preferred to create from what he saw rather than imaginary landscape. Board measures 12x24 framed to overall size of 15x27. African American Highwaymen Folk Art, evolved from the Backus Indian River School Art Colony. Condition: Very Fine
