Egypt, Early Dynastic, 1st-3rd Dynasty 3000-2700 B.C. Alabaster. H. 2 61/64 in; 7.5 cm. Dm. 2 3/4 in; 7 cm
Wide vessel with offset lip and two lug handles below the shoulder. A linen cover could be attached by tying a string around the vessel, thereby using the rill between the lip and the vessel's body. Horizontally grained stone.
Traces of drilling clearly visible on the inside. Exterior smoothend. Handles and lip slightly worn, a fissure runs from lip to foot, otherwise intact.
Formerly Münzen und Medaillen AG, Basel, Auction 46, 28.04.1972, no. 35 (there as 12th Dynasty which is too late). Thereafter Coll. C., Switzerland. JDC Auction 2, 26.06.2000, no. 330. Priv. coll. Dr. Frank Hieronymus (1930-2022), Basel, acquired 01.02.2012.
