This is a very interersting map tracing the travels of Marco Polo in the 13th century in Asia. Japan is shown as a peninsula connected to mainland Russia. This is one of the few maps to make mention of Marco Polo, the Venetian merchant and explorer. His primary travel path is shown by dotted lines.... He traveled mostly along the Silk Road to reach China. In China he met the Emperor, Khublai Khan, and formed a relationship with him that allowed to Marco Polo to travel extensively within China and in Southeast Asia as the Emperor's foreign emissary. The decorative title cartouche features three Asian men and a pile of riches.
