2 Embroidered Mao Propaganda Banners, China, 1967.Loopstitch polychrome cotton embroidery in black, red, and green on linen. Size: 1) 85.5'' x 33'' (217 x 84 cm); 2) 93'' x 32'' (236 x 81 cm). Featuring life-sized images of the architect of the Cultural Revolution, Mao Tse Tung, stern-faced and wearing his traditional green modern Chinese suit, which became known as the Zhongshan suit. One banner has him holding a brush writing on paper with its manufacture date, August 1967, shown at the bottom right in red. Good condition with some age-toning, discoloration throughout the pieces, consistent with age.
