This exquisite piece is rendered on fine cotton using the wax resist technique, featuring a mandala-like design at its center. The end borders are adorned with a stripe design, cleverly imitating a fringe, which is a characteristic hallmark of the Jambi style. In the late 17th century, batik cloth gained immense popularity due to its affordability and durability when compared to Indian trade cloths. It is highly likely that Javanese settlers introduced the batik technique and production to the Jambi region. Batiks hold a significant role in Jambi's ceremonial traditions, often worn during important rites of passage such as weddings, funerals, and births.
