Provenance: The collection of Sidney and Janet Francis (Olmos Park, Texas)
A noted San Antonio ceramist, Nancy Pawel became well-known in particular for her ceramic castles and angelic figures, which have attracted the attention of collectors across Texas. Pawel began her art career with classes at the McNay Art Institute, becoming fascinated with glazes for stoneware and porcelain. In 1969 she started teaching ceramics at the University of the Incarnate Word, and also created her own large home studio and classroom which she dubbed the "Pot Shop". Over the years Pawel mentored pottery students of all ages in her studio. She also executed several prominent public commissions around San Antonio including at the San Antonio Botanical Center, Hilton Palacio del Rio, Saint Marys Hall, Kelly Air Force Base, and the Natatorium at UIW. She also won many awards for her work, and for years there was a annual holiday tradition of people lining up at her studio to buy her castles for Christmas decorating.
