Description
** Mexican Marked Colt Single Action Army .38 WCF
.38 WCF. 4.75" barrel length. SN: 303316. (Mfg. Ca 1907) Blued metal finish with hardrubber {Rampant Colt} logo grips and kidney shaped ejector. Single-action loading gate revolver with six-shot cylinder and mounting topstrap notch and front blade sights. The left frame is struck with the two-line patent mark reading PAT SEPT.19. 1871./JULY 2. 72 JAN. 19. 75 followed by {Rampant Colt} within a circle. Additional marks include the VP proof mark on the left triggerguard along with the number 6. Barrel markings include the two line address mark reading COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A. with the left side showing the caliber marking 38 W.C.F. The left side of the barrel has been engraved E. de Mex, standing for Estados de Mexico. Two shipments of Colt Single Action Army revolvers were exported to Mexico by the M. Hartley Company of New York. Two shipments totaling 124 revolvers were sent to Mexico with the aforementioned markings, and remained in service there through the bloody revolution that followed lasting from 1910 to 1920. According to Graham, Kopec, and Moore in "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver," the revolvers were all chambered in .38 WCF and mounted 4.75" barrels. The cylinder pin has been replaced, and the revolver has an inventory tag attached to the trigger that reads WH on one side and 395 on the other.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
Good. The bore is Frosty with some patches of patina and weakness to the rifling throughout. The flanks of the frame, left barrel, and the sides of the recoil shield show some light pitting. The firearm shows a gray patina overall with light brown patina forming on the gripstraps and triggerguard. Some bluing remains on the seams of the ejector rod housing and the rear edges of the barrel. There are some deformations along the front edge of the frame from removing the cylinder pin. The grips display handling wear, mars, and some loss of the fine details. The checkering has worn down in places with some small nicks and mars to the checkering. The Colt logos remain recognizable, but the fine details to the eye and mane are worn down. The action shows good timing.
