Description
An American Portrait Miniature of Sarah Caldwell Lee (Virginia, 1775-1837). Watercolor, unsigned. Framed in a locket case with woven hair to reverse and label inscribed 'Sarah Lee 1775-1837'.
Sarah Lee's husband Edmund J. Lee (Virginia, 1772-1843) served as mayor of Alexandria, Virginia from March 1815-March 1818.
Together with three portrait miniatures of ladies, first half 19th century. Each framed in a locket case. Comprising a portrait of an infant with red dress and white bonnet holding a rattle; a young girl wearing a white dress with large hat; a young woman wearing a white dress and lace bonnet. (4)
Dimensions: Sight dimensions range from 2 x 1 5/8in to 2 1/2 x 2in; Frame dimensions range from 2 1/8 x 1 6/8in to 2 3/4 x 2 1/4in.
This lot comes from an Upper West Side, New York City collection that will be featured in a short lecture by noted specialist of portrait miniatures, Elle Shushan. Condition
Not examined out of the frames. Each portrait appears to be in generally good condition overall. The frames with typical wear, toning, and surface scratches.
