Latin America, Mexico, ca.19th century CE. A wonderful hand-carved and hand-painted wooden crucifix layered with symbolic and allegorical imagery known as "La Cruz de las Animas" or "The Cross of Souls." At the center is Christ on the Cross, flanked by the sun (left) and moon (right). Below Christ is the Mater Dolorosa grieving for her Son followed by the skull and crossbones of Golgotha. The dove of the Holy Spirit and the INRI sign are placed above Christ's head. Traditionally, this would have been placed in a stand painted with several Animas Solas, or lonesome, departed souls, shown in the flames of purgatory as they plead for salvation. A fabulous example of religious art representing a subject that was a popular cult of devotion throughout Mexico during the 19th century. Size: 11.8" W x 16.5" H (30 cm x 41.9 cm)

Cannot stand on its own; base is loose and detachable. Chipping to pigments, gesso, and peripheries of wood, as well as nicks and abrasions to surface. Some retouching to INRI sign. Otherwise, nice remaining pigments and heavy patina throughout.
