Mary Ann worked this needlework sampler while a young girl in school featuring a lovely verse promoting empathy from The Universal Prayer by Alexander Pope.
The sampler is inscribed: Mary Ann Bedford, April 12, 1805. According to a hand written note on the original backing paper, Mary Ann Bedford was the daughter of John Bedford and Mary Ann Phelps of Philadelphia.
Research shows that John Bedford and Mary Ann Phelps lived in London, England when Mary Ann, the sampler maker was born in 1794. At age 19 Mary Ann married Samuel Lieberkuhn Shober Jr. in Philadelphia, PA, and they had 7 children. One of Mary Ann and Samuel’s daughters married a man from Boston, MA and apparently she inherited this sampler and passed it down. It was reframed in 2006 in Boston. Silk on linen; 15.25 x 13.25 inches sight.
