Description
Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Early to Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2800 to 2000 BCE. A splendid and rather sizable blackware jug featuring a voluminous body with 3 recessed, horizontal bands encircling the broad hip. Sitting on a slightly round yet stable base, the elegant jar displays an attenuated neck and flared spout that rise from the rounded shoulder, and a faceted handle connecting the shoulder to the rim. An elevated, horizontal ridge encompasses the cylindrical neck, while 3 pairs of vertical ribs stretch from the neckline to the hip. A petite nub beneath the handle perhaps served to enhance gripping ability. Size: 11.1" W x 11.9" H (28.2 cm x 30.2 cm)
