Description
Native American / First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast United States / Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare hide dance collar that was part of ceremonial regalia during potlatches and other events in many Pacific Northwest cultures. The semicircular notch would have rested against the wearer's neck and the leather tassels may have been tied to the rest of the clothing or mask / headdress. The surface is painted with iconic formline in red and black, the zoomorphic face symbolizing clan affiliation or conveying other important information to the attendants. The hide is mounted in a modern display case. Size of hide: 20" L x 10" W (50.8 cm x 25.4 cm); case: 29.5" L x 23.5" W (74.9 cm x 59.7 cm)
