This ‘Second Jungle Book’ includes illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling.

Meredith Carre Smith was a Major in the East Surrey Regiment attached Cheshire Regiment of the British Royal Military during World War I. The East Surrey Regiment distinguished themselves in France and Italy taking part in the great battles of 1914, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne. In 1916, the 1st Battalion took part in battles of the River Somme, and distinguished itself notably at Morval in September.
