  • Description: Alejandro Selkirk Island, situated in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago, has been renamed in honor of the marooned sailor. The island's north side, Mas Afuera (Masa Fuerro), marks the westernmost point of the Juan Fernandez Archipelago. The illustration depicts an expedition party heading toward the island. "A Voyage Round the World" by Baron George Anson is considered one of the most remarkable firsthand accounts of voyages, adventure, and piracy during the age of exploration. Published in London in 1756, the book chronicles Anson's daring mission to attack Spanish territories in western South America and plunder Spanish treasure galleons. The consequences of being caught by the Spanish were severe, with piracy charges and execution awaiting Anson and his crew. The mission proved to be risky and challenging, resulting in the loss of over two-thirds of the crew and three of the eight ships. Nevertheless, the squadron embarked on their flagship, the Centurion, in 1740 and completed a circumnavigation of the globe by 1744, with only 125 men remaining. Anson's determined efforts eventually led to a triumphant moment when he captured the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon, 'Nuestra Seniora de Cobadonga' off Cape Espiritu Santo in the Philippines in 1743. This achievement earned him the promotion to Lord in the British crown and established him as one of the top English commanders during the Seven Years' War. The illustration is a copperplate engraving in excellent condition, measuring 18 1/4" x 11". Its authenticity is guaranteed.
