Description
Carmel Vitullo (b.1925). "Block Island Rocky Coast", 1968. Vintage silver-gelatin photo. Printed by the artist. Signed lower margin. Title and date verso with photographer's stamp. Dimensions: 7" x 8" (image); 11" x 14" (sheet). Unframed. Mounted on art board (for exhibition). Block Island was a favorite escape haunt for photographer Carmel Vitullo. The natural beauty enchanted her year after year particularly in the 1960’s before it became a tourist haven. As a result, she captured the remote and desolate coast. A daily reminder to residents of the power of the ocean beating around their island. In 2009, the Block Island Historical Society organized a one woman exhibition of Vitullo’s Block Island images and purchased several of those photographs for their permanent collection.Renowned photographer Carmel Vitullo returned to Providence to work as a professional photographer in the 1950’s. She joined the Providence Journal newspaper as a freelance photographer and was celebrated among her Providence colleagues after being selected for Steichen’s MoMA, "Family of Man" exhibition. Vitullo's photographs are in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, RISD Museum of Art, the Newport Museum as well as numerous other museums.
