Description
Arthur Douglas (1860-1949). "Approaching Storm, Narragansett Bay". Watercolor on paper. Signed lower right. Dimensions: 10" x 14". Framed: 19" x 23". Like the famous American painter Martin Johnson Heade, Douglas frequently portrayed changing weather conditions in his art. While Heade would paint a few of his most famous works of Narragansett Bay, Arthur Douglas spent a lifetime painting Narragansett Bay and the country hillside of Rhode Island. Douglas trained at Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 1892, achieving a remarkable proficiency in the delicate medium of water color. He demonstrated his technical prowess and garnered exhibits at the Providence Art Club and Society of Independent Artists. A Providence School artist who never achieved recognition beyond the state boundaries, his paintings are as fresh and appealing today as they were in the 19th century.
