Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Amlash, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A sizable example of a hand-built pottery pitcher, its surfaces covered in burnishing marks as well as decorated with attractive linear patterning. The broad body features a carinated midsection above a petite foot, a narrow, funnel-form neck, a slightly flared rim, and a thick handle arching off the verso. Amlash vessels like this were traditionally used as funerary vessels, meant for holding offerings of food or wine, and were developed as part of a larger pottery tradition in the Zagros and Elburz (also Alborz) Mountains.
