Description
Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Jemdet Nasr period, ca. 3200 to 2900 BCE; Old Babylonia, ca. 1900 to 1800 BCE. A fabulous pair of cylindrical stamp seal beads from the Ancient Near East: one made of seashell from Jemdet Nasr culture and the other of stone from Old Babylonia. First, the larger shell bead from Jemdet Nasr is incised with 2 bands of abstract linear designs as well as 8 circular gold inlays. Alternatively, the Old Babylonian seal features a worshipper and a standing deity flanking an altar and 3 columns of Sumerian text. Size of largest (Jemdet Nasr): 0.6" W x 1.25" H (1.5 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000; Jemdet Nasr is ex-London Coin Galleries of Newport, Newport Beach, California, USA

Condition
Suspension hole of Babylonian seal is blocked by earthen encrustations on one side inhibiting wear, but Jemdet Nasr bead is wearable. Jemdet Nasr bead is missing 2 gold inlays with chipping and earthen encrustations partially covering a few others. Both have some expected abrasions and surface wear. Otherwise, both are mostly intact with liberal remaining detail. Old Babylonian seal is accompanied by a modern impression.
