Originally published in 1638, this pictorial guide to the ancient buildings and monuments of Rome was issued in three editions in Rome before the plates were sold to the Dutch publishers of this edition, who added a new frontispiece etched by J.F. Greuter.
Alessandro Donati 91584-1640), born in Sienna, entered the Collegio Romano in 1600 and joined the Jesuit order.
Aside from this work, he is known for his poetry and plays.
