Item Details
Description

carving attributed to John Pollard, Philadelphia, circa 1770, works by David Patterson, Sunderland, England, an impressive and fully developed clock with exceptional carving, the hood with rocaille and flowing leaf decoration, scrolled pediment, gilt and silvered dial with second sweep moon phase and date aperture, waisted case with fluted quarter columns, base panel with applied carved flourishes, pendulum, two weights, and two winders, 101-1/4 x 21-1/2 x 10-3/4 in.

Provenance: Captain John Green Sr., 1736-1796, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; by descent through his family; sold Pook and Pook, Downingtown, Pennsylvania, March 22, 2004, lot 440; sold for $159,000; Important Private Virginia EstateNote: accompanied by documentation regarding John Green, including two volumes of letters and papers of John Green, a captain in the Navy of the United States of America and book titled The Empress of China by Philip Chadwick Foster Smith. Green served as captain of the Empress of China, the first ship to open up the China trade by sailing from America to Canton on February 22, 1784.

Condition

Retains a rich, early and possibly original surface. Likely original finials. There is good evidence to support the originality of the English dial and movement (see detailed photos of connection of saddleboard to case uprights). There are scattered repairs to the carved elements of the hood (the 2004 sale catalog at Pook & Pook shows the clock pre-conservation). The clock was expertly conserved after the 2004 sale. These include the very tops of the leaves on the pediment scrolls, one corner leaf on the tympanum, and restoration of the scroll board and central finial plinth. The feet have some restorations and repairs, including one front foot replaced. Dial is in good condition with minor tarnish and surface wear. Typical shrinkage crack to base panel, other typical minor repairs and surface flaws.
