Scrapbook with images and ephemera from Major Robert Gibbes Thomas. [South Carolina], [ca 1932]. Housed in leathette album. Includes 19 tipped in photographs, several newspaper clippings, a family tree, and pamphlets.
Major Robert Gibbes Thomas (1859-1932) was born into a prominent South Carolina family and was described by one of his obituaries as " a man devoted to South Carolina and her history and traditions." In the 1880s he was employed as an assistant United States engineer engaged in surveying the coast of Charleston and Savannah. In 1889, he became a professor of mathematics at the Citadel where he taught for 30 years. The scrapbook includes obituaries, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets authored by Thomas. It also includes several photographs, including 2 cartes de visite of a young Thomas wearing a military uniform when he was a student at the Columbia Male Academy and later the Carolina Military Institute (Charlotte). Also includes portraits and candid snapshots of him as a professor and older man, portraits of other family members, and outdoor views.
