Description
Edgefield, South Carolina, attributed to the Rhodes pottery operation. Highly important example, the large jug having brilliant kaolin slip flowers at two sides along with an incredibly rare image incised of a little girl near the handle. The girl having pigtails and a smile on her face in a dress. Incised decoration of any kind is rare on Edgefield stoneware in general however even more scarce are images of people. It begs the question as to what might have inspired such a decoration on this beautiful example. The body is nice and ovoid and the spout is tooled leading down to a nice strap handle. The piece has very minor restoration to the spout approx 1" wide, otherwise the jug is in excellent condition throughout. H16 1/4" W12" Sold from the collection of a South Carolina gentleman.
