Description
This is an excellent map of the eastern part of Brazil. There is an extensive detail in coastal regions as to rivers, towns with the interior left largely blank except for some conjectural river systems and mountains. The early mythical cartography shows the source of the Rio de la Plata as a series of lakes called Puerto de los Reyes. The Linea Aequinoctialis is prominently shown dividing the Spanish and Portuguese colonial claims. Richly embellished with rhumb lines, compass roses pointing north to the right and sailing ships. European traders, Indians and putti surround the title and scale of miles cartouches. It is based on the cartography of Hessel Gerritsz and an earlier map by Blaeu.
