Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Apache, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A large woven burden basket with a deer motif, made of devil's claw, sumac, willow, or other native plants, with lengthy hide cords attached to metal jingle cones. The melodic sound of the cones tinkling is unavoidable when carrying this basket - and though burden baskets were carried by women while trekking with the chiming warning away snakes and/or other dangerous wildlife. The baskets also served a ceremonial during the Sunrise Ceremony that marked a girl's passage into womanhood; the burden baskets were filled with food and gifts during the four-day event, and the girls would wear the baskets during dances. Size of basket: 24" Diameter x 16" H (61 cm x 40.6 cm)

Condition
Missing several jingle cones, but most are intact with light patina. Some abrasions and minor fraying to fibers, but intact and tightly woven. Good condition.
