Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial brass sword known as an "ada Ogun," that was often made for cult dedication at a shrine or used in theatrical battles during festivals celebrating the deity of metal and warfare, Ogun. This sword is cast from brass, with a cylindrical handle that is etched with linear motifs and a 3-ring pommel. Wealthy men would also wear these swords during festivals as a symbol of their prestige, and the blade of this piece is not sharp - entirely for show and pageant. Size: 22.3" L x 2.5" W (56.6 cm x 6.4 cm); 23" H (58.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Tear to the blade near handle, and bending to tip. Indentations and chips along edge. Green patina, oxidation, and dark toning throughout.
