West Africa, Nigeria, Nok Village / Religion, Nok head fragment made from terra cotta, portrayed with flared nostrils, and an open mouth suggesting the deep inspiration and exhalation associated with meditation. He appears to be wearing a helmet or headdress with a chin strap. Size 6 3/4" H on included custom stand, head 5" H
Nok figures and the discovery of the culture circa 1928 has indicated the remains of the Nok civilization / religion once span a large area of Nigeria, Niger, and portions of Eastern Benin. The figures are marked by a style of elongated faces with horizontal triangular eyes and often depict warriors or important figures. The terracotta when in great condition exhibits a smooth slip and when worn the shell or white specks become visible in the layers revealed with wear and handling.
