Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built bichrome terracotta figure with pointed feet, large thighs, a slender waist, attenuated looped arms, a flat chest, and rounded shoulders. The visage is comprised of small double-slit eyes, a prominent nose, drooping earlobes, a small mouth, and a wide brow, all on a characteristically-oversized and flattened head. The smooth surface is painted in a cream hue, and facial marks, waist and arms band, and necklace additions are highlighted in red-orange pigment. Figures like this were placed inside of the shaft tombs sunk beneath dwellings; these burial places would hold multiple generations of the household. A wonderful example from this shaft tomb culture that scholars continue to explore. Size: 5.25" H (13.3 cm).

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, with minor chips and losses to feet, nose, top of head, and earlobes. Some red-hued discoloration across body, and nice mineral deposits throughout. Old collection sticker adhesive on back near base, and an old collection sticker reading "2705-10" underneath one leg.
