Description
Single leaf from a sixteenth-century Persian illuminated manuscript copy of the Shahnameh written by Ferdowsi. Middle third of the leaf bears a full colour illumination depicting Zahhak, an evil tyrant with snakes protruding from his shoulders, being led into captivity by Fereydun, a mythical Persian king; the rest of the leaf includes depictions of various spectators and 46 lines of Persian verse across 4 columns. Heightened by gold leaf throughout.
