Description
A U.S. WWI AIR SERVICE GROUPING. Comprising the memorabilia, insignia and uniform of Iowa native Lt. John M. Schaupp Jr. including a rare Spalding leather flight helmet with painted star insignia and integral neck cover, size 7 ¼ together with period cockpit photo with Schaupp wearing the helmet – very good condition. Also an issued corduroy lined leather flight jacket together with original receipt of issuance as “drawn from the 49th Aero Squadron” 3rd Aviation Instruction Center supply office. Two officer uniforms comprising two four pocket blouses and a pair of bloused pants. A peaked officer’s hat with eagle device and two cloth overseas caps. Two pairs of knee high leather flight boots, a pair of leather officer leggings, a pair of wool leggings, two pairs of vintage goggles one French in original box, boot hooks, officers toiletry kit (incomplete) collapsible cups with leather cased, straight edge razors, an issued canvas duffle bag boldly marked to Lt. John Schaupp Jr. U.S. Air Service A.E.F. as well as other personal items. Insignia includes original bullion pilot wings with applied silver-gilt US device. Officer's collar insignia both US and Signal Corp type as well as 2nd and 1st Lieutenant pin back rank devices. Also Schaupp’s AEF photo identity card, Schaupp's flight book, complete and with pressed four leaf clover first entry October 11, 1917, last entry December 1918. Plus various other paper items including receipts as well as over two dozen period photographs including cockpit shots, training shots, aircraft images and images of Schaupp in uniforms. Also a very fine identified French leather satchel or map case inscribed Lt.John M. Schaupp Jr. A.E.F., numerous sets of wool undergarments, a silk "Blue Star" window banner, and a 18th century German Lutheran bible, commentary by Christoph Mattai Pfaffen, Tubingen, in poor condition. PROVENANCE: Directly through the family from John Schaupp to his grand children, the consignors.A wonderful offering.
