1788 1st ed History of Sumatra Indonesia William Marsden Voyages 2v SET Asia
“The most comprehensive book on the largest island of Indonesia!”
After spending eight years in Sumatra, William Marsden came back to England in hopes of getting an important job. When he did not, he devoted his time to writing a historical book on the history the island of Sumatra. Shortly after his work was published in 1782, he received accolades from important members of the Royal Society such as Dalrymple, Rennel, Maskelyne, Solander, and Herschel. Marsden then became a member of the Society, thanks to his work. According to Hoefer, Marsdens book shows a proper history, an accurate picture of government, and paints a picture of the manners and laws of the natives to Sumatra.
