Gold Rush Stock Certificate & Bond: Accessory Transit Co. of Nicaragua & Katherine Gold Mining Co. of DE

A pair of stocks and bonds from 1855 and 1927, relating to the Gold Rush. Both have flattened folds, light soiling, and war. The second certificate has a tear and paper loss at the bottom center edge. Overall very good.

The first is The Accessory Transit Company of Nicaragua bond certificate, 1p, measuring 11.5" x 9", New York, dated November 20, 1855. No. 54, promising to pay $1000 to Charles Morgan and George A. Hoyt, or the bearer. Signed by "Thos. Ward" as President, "Isaac C. Lea" as Secretary, and by "Chas Morgan" and "Geo. A. Hoyt."

The second is a Katherine Gold Mining Company of Delaware, 1p, measuring 11" x 8", Delaware, dated April 25, 1927. No. 1016, issuing 1000 shares of Capital Stock ($1.00 each) to Jules S. Bache. Signed by "Charles Suter" as President and "S. Evans" as Assistant Secretary. With transfer information and multiple stamps on verso.

The Accessory Transit Company was set up by Cornelius Vanderbilt and others during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s, with the aim to transport would-be prospectors from the East Coast of the U.S. to the West Coast. The Accessory Transit Company took passengers by steamer from New York to San Juan del Norte on the Caribbean or the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua. From there, prospectors traveled up the Rio San Juan to Lake Nicaragua, crossing the lake to the town of Rivas. A stagecoach then crossed the narrow isthmus to San Juan del Sur, where another steamer traveled to San Francisco. The ATC provided the cheapest route to California and was soon carrying 2,000 passengers a month at a fare of $300 each, later reduced to $150. Vanderbilt's original contract with the Nicaraguan government allowed him to operate the ATC and gave him exclusive rights to construct a Nicaragua Canal until 1861.

The Katherine Gold Mining Company was organized as a subsidiary company of the New Comstock Mining Company in 1919. A new shaft was constructed to the 600-foot level at the Katherine Mine in Arizona. A cyanide mill and diesel plant were also installed, and production started in 1925. Production continued until the mine was closed in 1930.
